One of Maddox Jolie Project's (MJP)
goals is to raise environmental awareness among the population
who live within and along the protected Samlaut Multiple Use Area. With
a huge grant from Angelina Jolie, CVD is enabled to execute a diversity
of activities to protect this designated site. The Earth-Day event this
year was held on July 16th 2004 with the efforts of many
parties who play a role in environment management and conservation. The
event is to put together on the understanding and encouragement of
participation from villagers, local authorities and other stakeholders
to take appropriate action toward the conservation of our valuable
heritage.

This year Battambang Department of Forestry agreed to take the role of the
coordination body by organizing the celebration of this important event. The
venue took place in one of the districts of Battambang, Ek Phnom, which
receives a direct impact from the MJP conservation site.
|
This event was presided over by His Excellency (H.E.) Prach Chan, Battambang
Provincial Governor. There was participation of NGOs, IO and local institutions
around the province. During the event, H.E. the Governor gave a very precise
speech about donating funds toward environmental awareness/education, and
supporting the livelihood of villagers who live near and around the project
site. He also stressed the great effort of everyone in the area to collaborate
and get involved in all aspects for the protection of our treasured nature.

During this event the Director of CVD emphasized to the participants that
the MJP, with the initiative of
funder Angelina Jolie, was established to protect and enhance the wildlife,
eco-system and watershed conservation values of the Samlaut Multiple Use
Area, in Samlaut District, Battambang Province. So today's activities
demonstrate our willingness to support the ongoing attempt and to encourage
the efforts to formulate this project into a complete natural protected area.

At the end of his speech H.E. Prch Chann expressed that "today is one of
the important days, as all of us took part in helping accomplishing the
King Sihanouk who always worked hard toward the conservation of our nature".
The King designated this protected area for 20 years ago, refer to the Royal
Decree dated November 1st 1993. The main purpose of this decree
is to ensure that our nature is maintained for future generations. H.E.,
the Governor, planted some trees in order to encourage more activities in
reforestation so that everyone in the community considers this issue. In the
future it should be continued to do this as part of everyone's obligation
for the nation of Cambodia.
